Self-branding both online and on social media’s many outlets was all the rage in 2011 for new and even long-established celebrities. Today it seems nothing is slowing down this web phenomenon in 2012 as Facebook and Twitter members continue to grow by the tens of thousands each and everyday. There certainly is no exception when discussing Latinos, especially as they one of the largest and fastest growing groups in America today. These artists that are continuing to breakthrough in mainstream America, are now as popular, if now more so, than some of the world’s most famous megastars, such as Lady Gaga and Britney Spears.
Just like Shakira’s hips, the numbers don’t lie. The Colombian musician and performer is by far the most popular Latino star on the web today. Need some proof? The international pop star has roughly 2.5 million more “Followers” on Twitter than President Barack Obama and nearly 20 million more “Likes” on Facebook than country sweetheart, Taylor Swift. With Shakira reportedly in the works of writing material for her eighth studio album, 2012 looks to be an even bigger year for the Latina singer.
As freakishly impressive as Cristiano Ronaldo has been throughout his 15 year professional soccer career, 2012 looks to be even bigger for the soccer star . The soccer stud has successfully led his team, Real Madrid, to the top of the La Liga (the top of professional soccer leagues in Spain). With onlyweeks left until playoffs begin, Ronaldo and his teammates are finally in position to beat the team’s rival, FC Barcelona. FC Barcelona, which also just happens to be captained by Ronaldo’s personal rival, Leo Messi, has snubbed the team’s chances of winning the championship for the past three years. Regardless of the season’s outcome for the star, as soccer becomes more and more popular, especially in America, this soccer phenomenon will no doubt continue to grow and rise in terms of popularity all across the globe.
2012 is shaping up to be a huge year for this music icon. The reason why she has been selected as one of the biggest Latino stars on the web in 2012 is because the pop and R&B music sensation is finally back in the studio working on a follow-up to her 2009 hit album, “Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel“. The female performer, who is only second to the Beatles with an astounding 18 #1 singles throughout her career, has enlisted Jermaine Dupri and Bryan-Michael Cox for this new album. Both of these producers helped create some of Carey’s most memorable hits to date, including “We Belong Together” and “Don’t Forget About Us”. This looks to be another breakthrough year for the artist as she has successfully mastered motherhood and along with her husband’s, Nick Cannon, health issues at ease for now, Carey can finally concentrate and reclaim her title as the Queen of Pop.
(As for some arguing that Carey technically is not a Latina, well don’t worry; you don’t have take my word for it. Check out her explanation and scientific proof to back it up from an interview with George Lopez on “Lopez Tonight” in late 2009.)
